Al Jaffee’s fold-ins for Mad magazine

A New York Times interactive feature of the Mad magazine fold-ins created by Al Jaffee since 1960.

If you were young at any time in the last 44 years, you know the fold-in: the feature on the inside of Mad’s back cover that poses a question whose answer is found by folding the page in thirds.

Mr. Jaffee does have a computer, but its main benefit, he said, has been to make the typographic tricks in the fold-in easier to create. He doesn’t draw with it, which leads to another surprise: the master of the fold-in never actually folds.

“I’m working on a hard, flat board,” he said. “I cannot fold it. That’s why my planning has to be so correct.”

“The computer would make it so much simpler,” he added. “But I think I’m going to remain a dinosaur.”

BBC News Site Refresh

The BBC News website has a new look—a wider, more whitespacy, and cleaner look. Looks great, and I like how they kept the layout people have come to love about the site, and worked within that layout to make it wider and cleaner.

First - we did some research asking you what you thought we should change about the site. Many of those we asked said leave it alone - don’t change a thing. But it was also clear from the feedback we got that there were others who thought the site design could do with a bit of a revamp

So our designers embarked on a mission that they have called a “site refresh” - they say it’s “like gardeners doing a bit of pruning and weeding, but not digging it up and starting from scratch” ie it’s not a fundamental redesign of everything – many of the basics stay the same, because we know they work.

Indian Marksmen Out of Bullets

Due to a shortage of ammunition for training, Indian marksmen who have qualified for the Beijing Olympics, are fed up with the Indian government and threatening boycott.

On Friday, Sethi was quoted in the local media as saying the government provided the NRAI with all ammunition for 23 years but stopped doing so two and a half years ago.

“I don’t think it will be worthwhile sending the shooters to the Olympics. The damage has been done. I will take the issue up in our next general body meeting next month,” Sethi said.

“It’s a pity that the shooters were the best medal hopes and they are treated so shabbily.”

LiveLeak Takes Down Fitna

Due to threats from Muslims, London based site, LiveLeak.com, has taken down Fitna—a controversial 17min film by Dutch politician Geert Wilders. Few days back, Network Solutions had taken down the movie’s official site.

Fitna juxtaposes passages from the Islamic holy book with graphic footage of terrorist attacks in the United States and Europe. In one scene, the sound of paper ripping can be seen as a reader pages through the Quran.

“My intention was not to offend in any way but to show the truth — at least, the truth as I see it,” Wilders said. “And if the truth hurts and could be offensive, well, this of course is not my problem.”

The film is still available on Google Video

YouTube Stats

YouTube InsightYouTube Insight, a new feature on YouTube which will let video creators see more detailed stats about their videos. To see your stats, go to My account > Manage my Videos > Videos, Favorites, Playlists page, and click on the “About this video” button. Right now, it looks like there are just a couple of graphs, and nothing detailed like you would see on Flickr stats, for example.

uploaders can see how often their videos are viewed in different geographic regions, as well as how popular they are relative to all videos in that market over a given period of time. You can also delve deeper into the lifecycle of your videos, like how long it takes for a video to become popular, and what happens to video views as popularity peaks.

Just to pass acid3 test

Vasanth Dharmaraj raises concern that the WebKit and Opera development teams might be tweaking their code just to pass a flawed acid3 test, rather than focusing on the standard itself.

Passing the test does not mean that the browser has implemented the standards completely and correctly.

This is like the difference between studying to pass the test in class and studying to gain knowledge.
